Studies at VDU have broadened my perspective and given me a better understanding for social work

"My name is Hanna and I am from Sweden where I have been studying social work at Linköping University. I spent my final semester at the social work programme in Kaunas where I studied at VMU.  For me, it was a great experience to study social work in Lithuania and I am glad I got the opportunity to study as an exchange student at VMU. I really appreciated the global perspective which VMU provided me and during the semester I got many perspectives on social work and social problems in different countries. During the classes, we had a lot of discussions about social work and how it is operated and viewed in different countries which helped me to broader my own perspective and I think I have a better understanding of global social work now than before my semester in Kaunas.

In the beginning of my semester it was a challenge to understand how everything worked, both in Lithuania and at VMU. I got a lot of support from the teachers at VMU and I always felt that I could ask them if I had any questions. Another thing I really appreciated was that I always felt that the teachers and the students were interested in Sweden and social work there. We did a lot of comparisons between Lithuania and Sweden which made it easier for me to understand social work in Lithuania. During my semester I attended an intensive programme with students from Norway, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. During this programme I had the opportunity to visit a residential home and a home for children which I think was a good complement to the theoretical studies at VMU. In total, I am really glad that I got the opportunity to study at VMU and I think my studies there have broadened my perspective and given me a better understanding for social work."

I am very glad of being part of this University!

Hello! My name is Klaudia and I am from Albania. I hold a Bachelor Degree with excellent results in Philosophy from University of Tirana (Albania). I came in Lithuania in September 2012. I got the opportunity to be part of a European Volunteer Programme, in Caritas Organization working on the project “Aid to Elderly and Sick People”.  I was looking for a new challenge in my life, for new activities, new culture, meeting new people that maybe would create a broaden horizon of the way I perceive world, of me.

The first word I knew in Lithuanian was “Aciu”, that I used a lot here.Lithuania is actually about welcoming: a country that opens it heart and says welcome to so many people that want to be here, to live, to work, to study or just to have the pleasure of visiting and seeing more from it. I felt Lithuania every day when I wake up in the morning, I felt Lithuania in the houses I went everyday to meet elderly people and to help them with their everyday tasks. I felt their good feelings and their very expressive thoughts in their eyes.During the time I learnt Lithuanian language while emphasizing many of the opportunities to practice it, and now I have quite good knowledge of it. I also found myself very comfortable with Lithuanian society, language, culture and values. After finishing the project I got the opportunity to start my Master Degree in Social Work in Vytautas Magnus University, on September 2013.  I was intrigued by the wide breadth of opportunities they offer and I totally believe in the values and mission of University. Following the Master Class in Social Work is a very valuable experience in terms of learning as well as other intercultural activities organized in this context.

I am very satisfied from the professors, their way of teaching, the video conference sessions with the American University and other non-formal learning methods applied in different classes.I am very glad of being part of this University! To me VMU is an open space for students and the perfect combination of academic and extra-curricular activities for a successful career! :)

My extraordinary experience at Vytautas Magnus University

Gabrielle’s thoughts about her two years spent in Lithuania studying master in Social Work in Vytautas Magnus University.

If I had to use a word to summarize the two years I spent studying at VMU, I would choose extraordinary. Each course uniquely impacted my understanding of the field of social work, and when combined together gave me a well-rounded knowledge base to confidently draw from when applying theory to practice. VMU provided an avenue for international perspectives to gather. One of my favorite things about my time at VMU was the global perspectives I was consistently exposed to. I learned how social work operated in different countries; how different nationalities viewed social problems. My peers and I were in a constant exchange of ideas common within our nations' own worldviews. It was nothing short of thrilling.

With the international nature of this program there came one challenge. At times when certain topics were being discussed the English language was not accessible enough for some to utilize to sufficiently express their ideas in the ways their native language could. This meant that sometimes discussions were held in a language I could not understand. That being said, there usually was a great effort made to translate the major points of the discussion to keep me informed and included. Regardless of this one difficulty, I could not image studying Social Work anywhere else. My time at VMU has shaped my perspectives and knowledge in ways other universities could not and I feel confident that the information I learned at VMU will consistently aid me in the professional fields I choose to pursue. I wish to express my deepest gratitude to the social work faculty for everything they did to make my studies at VMU so transformative.
